This has been quite an exciting trip. I hope that I will one day get used to the motion of ships so that I can enjoy the cruises. I thought I had it once on the trip back, but it was just the calm before the storm- literally. I don’t think I have ever been so sick in all my life.
Once I was back on dry land, things got much better. Clarice and cousin Beau are such wonderful travel companions, even if they do tend to want to keep me to heel more than I like. So far, they have had lovely suggestions, so I don’t mind all that much.
We had a bit of excitement after a show the other night. The show itself wasn’t all that exciting, but some toughs decided that we would make good marks as we were leaving. It was very amusing to watch Beau and Clarice together, and it looks like Brat has gotten a new gun; I must remember to ask him about it sometime. I did as Ioana suggested, and just kept ready to draw mine; there was already plenty of danger visible, and it is so much more fun to surprise people. Brat trotted out pappy’s standby about not bringing a knife to a gunfight, and the toughs apparently decided that their odds weren’t as good as they thought. I was very good and waited until I got home to laugh myself silly over it.
It seems Clarice has maneuvered Beau into helping one of her high-minded causes again. The museum wants to send out a naturalist named {Roger} to collect plants throughout the United States, and Beau asked Brat to be his sort of native guide. It sounds like no end of fun, so of course everyone is assuming I won’t be going. Well, I am 18 this year, and I have been wanting to get out and about a bit, so you had better bet I will find a way to tag along. If nothing else, they can’t very well stop me if I happen to be going the same direction!
We took an overnight train from New York to Pittsburgh, and transferred to a riverboat called the Allena May. It is a fairly nice, trim vessel, but a bit small. Beau stopped wearing the lovely outfits he usually wears when we came on board, so I assume he is trying to keep a bit lower profile than we would on a larger vessel. Brat still dresses like always; I wonder if he ever gets tired of dressing to the nines all the time?
We will stay on the riverboat through New Orleans, without having to change once, which is lovely. I can stay settled in and enjoy this trip; rivers don’t make me sick at all, thank goodness.
The naturalist is having a wagon commissioned in St. Louis so that he can bring back all the samples, so I should have some time to visit around and figure out how to make sure I go with him and Brat before they get set up and going.
